Born in Christchurch, Bill Hammond attended Canterbury University School of Fine Art 1966-1968. He has worked as a toymaker, full-time artist and printmaker. Bill tends to produce surreal images , taking inspiration from popular culture (such as comic books and rock music), as well as history. After visiting the Auckland Islands in 1989, he developed an interest for native birds and has incorporated references to the work of 19th century ornithologist Sir Walter Lawry Buller. As well as more traditional media, Bill has produced many of his artworks on disused everyday materials such as door panels and wallpaper.
